They both have excellent shops, and long summer festivals with music, dance, and theatre. Avignon’s cultural activities continue throughout the winter. All the local villages have fetes during the long hot summer months. For antique lovers, the world famous market at L’lisle-sur-la-Sorgue is a short drive away. The unique Vaison La Romaine, medieval on one side of its river, and with Roman remains the other side, is just the to the North of the Mount Ventoux.
The Roman cities of Orange, Arles, and Aix en Provence are about an hour’s drive away.
The Camargue, with its wonderful wild life including flamingos, bulls and wild horses is about 90mins away. Also about 90 mins away is the pretty coastal resort of Cassis. A sixty minute drive takes you to the Luberon.
For good food lovers there are many exceptional restaurants very close by.
The wines are mentioned briefly elsewhere, but as well as the favourites, Gigondas, Chateauneuf-du-Pape and the wonderful desert wine of Beaumes-de-Vanise, you may also like to try the wines of Vacqueyras, as well as, of course, the more local wines from Les Vignerons du Mont Ventoux in Bedoin.
For those who get bored sitting in the afternoon shade, reading a book, with a glass of wine, it is a wonderful area for walking and cycling. You may like to try the Tour de France route to the top of Mt.Ventoux! There are rivers to fish, or canoe, horse riding, and the village has tennis courts.
